Ninety Mile Beach

Ninety Mile Beach along the western coast of the far north of the North Island is indeed not 90 miles. It is 97km or 60 miles. It stretches from west of Kaitaia towards Cape Reinga on the northern tip of the island.

Not just any vehicles are allowed to drive along the beach. Only the specially modified tour buses / coaches are allowed, but it does not come cheap! Fortunately there are a few ‘lookout points’ along the way. We detoured off from the main road to these lookout points and took a little walk on the fine sandy beach.

The place looked barren and desolate, but as I stared into the wide expanse of the Tasman Sea and listened to the sound of the waves rushing towards the shore, it somehow gave me a sense of peace and calmness. I actually wished I could stay there for a while longer.
